Blood Vessel 2023

Brad Anderson’s “Blood” attempts to function as both a grisly horror thriller and an exploration of situational ethics, presenting viewers with a challenging scenario and urging them to reflect on their responses. Unfortunately, it falls short on both fronts, lacking the necessary horror intensity and failing to engage as an ethical study. Michelle Monaghan’s central performance as Jess, a nurse navigating a contentious divorce while dealing with a life-threatening situation involving her son, emerges as a highlight in an otherwise lackluster film. The central theme of a parent’s extreme actions for their child’s survival is introduced but lacks coherence, making Jess’s decisions feel inconsistent. Anderson, known for his success in horror, struggles with a convoluted plot that concludes with unintended laughter rather than fear. Despite Monaghan’s commendable effort and a few compelling scenes, “Blood” ultimately disappoints, unable to fulfill its potential and leaving the audience yearning for more from its intriguing premise.
